Text description provided by the architects. Located adjacent to Xiangmi Lake Park in Shenzhen, fun. noodle bar is a restaurant which enjoys the stunning view of lake and city skyline.
To fully take advantage of the view, the restaurant splits into two parts: indoor dining and outdoor terrace bar. Terrace bar can be read as an extension of nature which is captured by the notion of "cabana", 8 wood boxes, into the indoor dining area. These wood boxes strengthen the view framing concept and define the edge of public and private.
The client has asked for simplicity since beginning of the project. The design reflects simplicity in several aspects: 1. Materiality. Oak wood and concrete are major materials. Exposed ceiling and wall set concrete to background and let wood bring richness and focus. Besides wood floor, there are tall wood fins functioned as barriers between kitchen and dining. Wood boxes are semi private dining space and furniture are the same wood category. 2. Circulation. The square indoor space is divided into quadrants. Circulation is the exact center slot of space separates the four quadrants. A pair of wood boxes are centered in each quadrant with flexible seating. Circulation efficiency is well benefit from the rigorous geometrical space arrangement 3. Structure. Each wood box consists of five arrayed frames. Each frame is constructed by 1cm thick oak wood finish on steel tubes anchored with concrete slab. Frames are bonded together beneath finish floor. So from up above they stand alone with no more structure connections. 4. Furniture. Wood tables and seating are designed to be consistent with the idea of framing. And geometrically, the cube form of seating follows the same language that is used in entire design.
The monolithic design of space shows same principle as the simple and elegant cuisine style of fun. noodle bar, as well as respect to its unique view.
